Live Review: Samsaruh is explosive on 'Gunpowder'

With just two tracks to her name, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter SAMSARUH has cemented herself as one of the most impressive voices in new Aussie music. Her latest single, 'Gunpowder', sees her transcending her defiant sound and creating something truly incredible.

The 19-year-old musician dropped her debut 'Golden to Thrive' last year, and the results were immediate, earning her high rotation on Triple J and a feature artist accolade on Triple J Unearthed. With her sophomore single, 'Beautiful Killer' she outdid herself, displaying remarkable defiance in her performance while showing a more nuanced side in her lyrics..

'Beautiful Killer' was one of those tracks that floored me from the first second with how strong and in-your-face it was; it's one of those sounds that you think will be impossible to top. Samsaruh clearly isn't one to back down from a challenge, because now she's back with a brand new explosion. 'Gunpowder' is easily her most stunning track yet, and might just be one of the most impressive tracks of the year. Produced by Chris Collins (of Tigertown), it's absolutely bursting at the seams with layers of fearsome vocals soaring above heavy percussion, dissonant synths and roaring guitar. Much like an eruption of the titular gunpowder, it's a short but oh-so-powerful cut that burns with remarkable finesse.

Samsaruh has such remarkable command of her voice that you can't help but be in awe listening to 'Gunpowder'. Combined with her tight songwriting skills and masterful production, her craft is so captivating that you instantly understand how she's been so successful - we can only hope she truly explodes in 2018 because we can't think of someone more deserving.
