Live Review: PREMIERE: Sophiegrophy is taking no prisoners on 'Bag'

29 March 2018 | 9:25 am | Jackson Langford

It doesn't take long listening to 'Bag' to realise and fully understand that Sophiegrophy is by no means here to play around.

When it comes down to it, it's hard not to listen to anything SOPHIEGROPHY has to say. Everything she says comes out with such conviction, assertion and absolute savagery that you'd be foolish not to open your ears. It's been a long time since an Aussie rapper has come along that barbs every word they spit in such a deliberate and assured way, and is so relentless with their delivery, but sure enough Sophiegrophy more than steps up to the plate with the absolute sonic onslaught that is 'Bag.'

'Bag' only lasts for three-and-a-half minutes, but the amount Sophiegrophy packs into that space you'd swear it went for hours. But a major part of the song's charm is that no matter how long you feel like it goes for, you can't look away nor do you want to. With every line that she breathlessly fires across the booming trap beat, you get sucked in more and more. It's an onslaught of warning shots to not come for the young queen, because you will miss. It's an ode to the Melbourne rapper's natural versatility that escapes most of her colleagues - there aren't too many rappers that can feel just as home on a stalking trap beat as they do on a glittering, electro-pop melody like she does on debut single, 'Fa$t Life.'

It doesn't take long listening to 'Bag' to realise and fully understand that Sophiegrophy is by no means here to play around. Business is on the table, money's on her mind and the top is in her reach. 'Bag' is just another notch in the rapper's already impressive resume, but this one might be her most powerful. The crown is going to be hers, whether you like it or not.
