Live Review: Let Essie Holt pull you in with 'Magnetise'

27 March 2018 | 6:58 pm | Jackson Langford

As Essie Holt pulls us in with every note she utters on 'Magnetise', we're confronted with a bleak reality but one we're comfortable with.

There's something truly electrifying about the optimism that surges through you when those opening synths of 'Magnetise' beam. No stranger to atmospheric sound, ESSIE HOLT spares no moment in sending us to a sonic utopia that we don't stop exploring until the song's final moments. She takes us for a magic carpet ride and, as we're blinded by the stars, we realise that we're not ready to hop off just yet.

Of course, 'Magnetise' is not a result of Holt's efforts alone. The soaring production is helmed by FRACTURES, who is no stranger to creating infectious electronic music. The melody feels feather-light and is not completely weighed down in bass, which gives Holt's airy, ethereal vocals centre stage.

Essie Holt is certainly piloting this vessel, as her stunning vocal delivery is easily where the song gets most of its charm. She's coupled that with lyrical vulnerability - "No it doesn't feel right / We're not magnetised / I know you feel it too" - and we get a clear sense of what she's talking about. There's a longing for a connection that once was, but a simultaneous acceptance that that connection will never be made again. A grim but all too real part of life.

As Essie Holt pulls us in with every note she utters on 'Magnetise', we're confronted with a bleak reality but one we're comfortable with. With Fractures behind the ethereal production that perfectly compliments Holt's airy voice. 'Magnetise' is a song that pulls you in so quickly that you might forget to blink, but it's a song you won't be forgetting any time soon.
