Live Review: Annie Bass brings the pop out of Christopher Port on 'Thrown Away / Counting All'

Annie Bass and Christopher Port collaborate on a very special two-track, 'Thrown Away / Counting All', bringing a new pop-sensibility to Port's production

CHRISTOPHER PORT and Sydney-based singer ANNIE BASS have shared their special, one-off collaborative two-track, 'Thrown Away / Counting All'. No strangers to collaboration, Christopher Port produced Bass' 2017 single, 'Don't Want', which had fans all over hungry for more, and now they've finally delivered.

Port creates a warm, subdued sonic palette for Bass’ ethereal voice to glide over, the two tracks being built around a combination of pillowy, pulsating synths, chopped vocal samples, and skipping beats. It’s a far cry from the nocturnally-tinged, forward-thinking UK Garage productions that Port has made a brand out of. By disappearing within his own production, Port instead highlights his own stylistic diversity, the collaboration bringing out a pop leaning that’s been lying dormant since BUOY’s ‘Clouds and Rain’. It’s testament to Port’s own assertion that the two tracks represent “the most truly collaborative music I’ve made to date.”

Bass describes lead single ‘Thrown Away’ as being “about the desperate fear of a something ending, and all the things you’ll tell yourself to keep it from slipping way. The song began as a piano ballad – recorded as a voice memo on my iPhone and tucked away for a long time. Working together with Chris brought it back to life. He has a way of turning words and melodies I never through would see the light of day into songs I am really proud of.”

Port expands on this collaborative process: “The two track was made in a handful of sessions in Melbourne with each track starting as a sketch by Annabel. We both worked at picking them apart and flipping them around, changing the chords, melody and lyrics together, all delivered through Annabel’s incredible voice."

In the spirit of collaboration, the two-track serves larger purposes for both artists. For Port, the work here gives a hint towards the direction he’s looking to go in with the follow-up to last year’s Everything in Quotes “DARK” EP – the companion EP, Everything in Quotes “LIGHT”. For Bass, however, whose darkly evocative vocal performance remains the centrepiece of the two-track, the collaboration should serve to further her reputation ahead of her imminent debut solo EP.
