Jess Locke gives us a beginner's guide to Footscray

28 February 2018 | 9:19 am | Jackson Langford

As she gears up to tour her latest single 'Dangerous', Jess Locke has given us an insider's outline on what makes Footscray so great.

JESS LOCKE had an absolutely stellar breakout year last year. After signing to The Smith Street Band's POOL HOUSE RECORDS and releasing her stunningly introspective Universe, the world quickly caught on to Locke's beautifully laid-back yet blazingly honest songwriting. The summer haze that cloaks all of her songs makes it perfect solitary listening, and that's only amplified by her ability to tap in to our inner monologues in ways few before her have managed to do.

Now, as she gears up to tour her latest single 'Dangerous', Jess Locke has given us an insider's outline on what makes Footscray - where Universe was recorded - so great.

The Rev is one of Melbourne's best pub and music venues. I've performed there countless times, on laidback Sunday afternoons in the front bar, and supporting international bands in the substantial band room out the back. The Rev is great of you are a musician and also if you are a punter. The staff are friendly and the kitchen offers vegan versions of every item on the menu including the slightly overwhelming (in a good way) cheeseburger pizza. I also happen to work at the Rev too (did I mention that staff are friendly?) which means I get constant feedback about how good the food is.

Footscray Market (RIP Little Saigon)

In need of some cheap veggies? Need a key cut? Look no further than Footscray Market. Right next to the train station, its a very convenient and affordable place to get your groceries.

Hey Zeus Cafe

Good coffee is to be found in this inconspicuous spot located on the edge of the market, opposite the train station. Grab a brew here before you jump on a train. Or just grab one and hang around.

Yenhuot Gift Store

This is the variety store of variety stores. It has one aisle dedicated entirely to plastic flowers. I frequently stop in here to buy masking tape.

Footscray Park

Sitting on the Maribyrnong River, Footscray Park is a great spot to got for a walk or a ride, have a picnic or just lay under a tree and contemplate the lovely variety of flowers and plants.

Newell's Paddock Wetlands Reserve

Follow the path along the river and you come to Newell's Paddock Wetlands, a surprisingly tranquil spot that supports both a habitat for the local wildlife and pretty great views of the CBD.
