8 January 2018 | 10:35 am | Ruby Miles

For women in rap music, there is no time like the present, and Australia has come to play, serving up their fair share of talented artists such as Tkay Maidza, Miss Blanks and Sampa the Great. Purple-haired goddess, SOPHIEGROPHY quickly emerged in Australia’s rap and electronic scene in 2017, proving that she is also a part of this bold female hip hop movement- and certainly one to keep an eye on in 2018.

Sophiegrophy is Nigerian-born, New Zealand-raised and currently lives in Melbourne, contributing to her other-worldly aura which also explains how "worldwide" her target audience is. She slipped into the scene in 2016 with her PURPULARITY EP on Soundcloud but her career really kickstarted when she blew up a year later, gaining hundreds of followers through her freestyle videos on Facebook. Over the space of a few months her unique rap style and vocals were features on tracks by international producers such as Walker & Royce as well as more locally with Milwaukee Banks, Airwolf, and Strict Face to make some amazing club beats- all this time still working on her own solo music.

2017 has shown Sophiegrophy’s magnificent versatility. Her punchy verses on Walker & Royce’s single, ‘My Own Thing’, and Strict Face’s ‘Cobra Charm’ show that she is capable of making the difficult leap into the electronic club scene. Meanwhile, she's also served up melodic dancehall vibes on Milwaukee Banks’s song ‘Lights Down’ and her own debut single ‘Fa$t Life’, proving she is no one-trick pony.

As Australia’s hip hop scene grows, it is fantastic to see so many women of colour emerging with their own unique style- and Sophiegrophy is one to lead this new generation. With so many huge tracks out in 2017- you can only expect an array of tour dates and festival appearances in 2018 from this powerful up-and-comer.
