Live Review: Body Promise celebrates experimental club on their 'Fantastic Effects' compilation

1 December 2017 | 1:17 pm | Holly O'Neill

The DJ duo with a taste for percussive dance beats are back with a new collection of left of centre club and bold atmospheric compositions.

Body Promise are a duo of DJ's with a taste for percussive experimental club sounds. They bring their supreme knowledge of underground tunes to their weekly self-titled show on FBi Radio in Sydney, and to their own label where they curate the artists they love. After releasing a stunning debut compilation last year, they're back with a new collection of left-of-centre club and bold atmospheric compositions, titled Fantastic Effects. Drawing from the sounds of techno, ambient, kuduro and house, each track could not be more different from the last.

This broad scope of influence gives a strength to the album as a whole, collectively showcasing the niche facets of progressive club music. Just like the last compilation, we have plenty of established artists flexing their production chops under different aliases. Keep an ear out for both halves of Fishing as HED Ardennes and The Ghan, Rainbow Chan and Moon Holiday coming together as DIN and Cassius Select's offering as fake.

Heavy hitters on this compilation include the only international addition, DJ N.K, with an ode to the samples and rhythms of his hometown of Portugal called 'Ghetto Whistles'. Another standout is 'GUT ROT' from Melbourne duo friendships, which is a hell of an intense, glitchy thrill ride. The debut production of Andy Garvey is another huge addition, with her track 'Club Music [Tool]' proving the Sydney DJ's clear grasp on acidic techno production.
