Live Review: Sevdaliza keeps us guessing with 'Hear My Pain Heal' video

The visually stunning video from Sevdaliza alludes to an unsolved murder in an old house, where even the smallest details seem to carry a hidden meaning.

Iranian-born Dutch artist SEVDALIZA is no stranger to mystery, both literally and conceptually. Her debut album, ISON, won praise for its intriguing, experimental pop sensibilities when it was released earlier this year, and now she has let us in on 'Hear My Pain Heal', a secret, previously unreleased track from the album. The visually stunning video alludes to an unsolved murder in an old house, where even the smallest details seem to carry a hidden meaning.

Over a thudding beat and almost choir-like synths, Sevdaliza's rich vocals create the feeling of an answer just out of reach. "When I resolve into the ground/ Would I feel as if I found what it means?" she wonders. In the video, things dissolve and disappear, and Sevdaliza's intense gaze is the only thread tying the narrative together. Leaving the story open to interpretation in this way was intentional, according to the artist and the video's director Ian Pons Jewell.

"It's difficult to explain 'Hear My Pain Heal' in terms of its narrative, as it came about as a hallucinatory or dreamlike experience," they explain. "Sevdaliza mourning at these large bare feet, crying for her lost ones, his head covered by the shadows from the tablecloth. A strange synchronous relationship resulted in 'Hear My Pain Heal.'"

As a song, 'Hear My Pain Heal' successfully channels Sevdaliza's trademark dark and ethereal mystery, but this video takes it to another level by making her vision into a beautiful, dark reality. Enigmatic and self-assured, she projects an artistic vision that stretches well beyond her debut album. We have no doubt there is so much more to come.

Sevdaliza will be heading to Australia early next year for a string of very special shows. Catch her at the dates below:
