Live Review: PREMIERE: Sarah Connor provides light in the darkness with 'Just Breathe'

17 November 2017 | 1:00 pm | Emma Jones

Having burst onto the hip-hop scene four years ago, SARAH CONNOR has had quite the journey to get to where she is now. She's opened for CommonAtmosphere, Brother Ali, Talib Kweli, Akala, Thundamentals, and also appeared at the likes of Come Together in 2015, Bigsound and The Plot last year, and played at Sydney Festival and Sprung just this year. With this hefty resume, it's no wonder she possesses a maturity and sense of wisdom well beyond her years that is evident in every song she touches. Pairing her exceptional songwriting skills with her dynamite flow, she crafts powerful hip-hop tracks that showcase just how formidable she is in the Australian hip-hop scene and beyond, and just how much more she still has to give.

Back with yet another exciting song, Sarah Connor has teamed up with ALPHAMAMA for 'Just Breathe', and this may be her best work yet. Once again not shying away from emotion and vulnerability, Connor injects life and soul into 'Just Breathe', sharing her optimistic outlook that light can be found in the darkness if you just take a second, and breathe.

Fierce as ever over a solid boom bap beat, Connor's verse act like a warm hug you need after a tough day. She details her own life experiences in all its grit and glory, and isn't afraid to be straight up and real here. Teaming up with Jesse Marantz (known for his work in Fluir), this really is a match-made in heaven that is only further amplified by ALPHAMAMA's soulful hook.

Impressive from start to finish, Sarah Connor once again shows she really is the real deal when it comes to the new wave in hip-hop that Australia is seeing at the moment. Set to drop her EP next year featuring production from Illsince86 and Jesse Marantz as well as featuring vocals by Lushess, Alphamama and Natalie Slade, it shows she's not going anywhere any time soon. With an impressive drive behind her and an innate knack of knowing how to make a good song, she is absolutely unstoppable at the moment, and 'Just Breathe' proves exactly this.
