Live Review: Get to know Tobacco Rat and his favourite tracks
The mysterious TOBACCO RAT might not like a lot of details be known about him personally, but there is one thing we definitely know: he knows his way around a great trap and bass tune. Having recently signed to TRENCH RECORDS, the WA producer has still kept his identity under wraps, but has shared his first EP on the label, and that's more than enough for us.
Titled Component, the EP serves as a snapshot into the mind of Tobacco Rat (real name Jake Steele), filled with eerie wastelands, nightmarish vibes and more than a few epic drops to keep you throwing down for hours. Including the hard-hitting banger 'GANGSTA' featuring WA rapper SOMA, Component is an impressive EP thats more than just a few trap tracks thrown together; there's thought and precision here, not to mention ambition from a rapidly rising producer.
Speaking of his EP, Tobacco Rat said, “The tracks from on the EP were created over the course of the last year, with both the Moog Voyager and Prophet 08 featuring heavily across the production. I was, and still am, influenced by a lot of the stuff coming out on Saturate and Trench Records, but was approaching it with my own style. I was originally going to release the tracks in pairs of tracks over a structured period, but after a few things fell into place combining them all into an EP made much more sense.”

CHEE - GET HOT (ft. NoClu)
Chee is a dude out of South Africa that makes some really dark and heavy bass beats, but still with nice melodic elements. Big future for him I believe.
IVY LAB - PENINSULA
Coming out of England and made up of 3 killer producers of their own account, these guys are pushing the current half time and beats scene into crazy directions.
HOLLY + FORMER - VISORS
Holly is a madman who seems to put out a collab every 2 days and this one with Former absolutely smashes.
G JONES + EPROM - HYSTERIA
G Jones has been my single biggest inspiration over the past couple of years and every track just gets better and better. This forthcoming collab with EPROM is mind blowing.
NOISIA - VIGILANTES
Without a doubt one of my favourite acts, these guys are at the forefront of futuristic bass related beats. Their latest album will still sound fresh in 5 years time.
BLEEP BLOOP - WATER ON MARS
Bleep Bloop always on that crazy alien shit.
ATLIENS - ALCHEMY
2 creepy masked dudes from Atlanta making some serious heavy hitting trap beats.
EPROM - PINEAPPLE
Eprom is constantly one step ahead of the entire game and keeps putting out super fresh and diverse tracks. Big Fan!
WOOLYMAMMOTH + NOER THE BOY - HEPHAESTUS RAGE
Both of these guys make crazy beats on their own but this collab really pushes the boundaries of sound design, half time beats, structure and music in general.
HUXLEY ANNE - NIN
Girl out of Los Angeles making some really dark, interesting, weird and amazing music.
