Live Review: Feel 'Better' with Mallrat's enchanting new single

16 October 2017 | 10:15 am | Max Lewis

Brisbane electro-pop star Mallrat has just dropped 'Better', her first solo single in a year and the first taste of her upcoming sophomore EP.

Brisbane electro-pop star Mallrat is back with 'Better', her first solo single in a year and her first since signing with Dew Process.

It was only a year ago that Mallrat released her debut EP Uninvited, and almost instantly ear-worm tracks like the title track, 'For Real', and 'Tokyo Drift' dominated the brains of listeners worldwide. She's racked up 12 million streams on Spotify to date, and received buckets of praise from publications and fans across the world.

'Better' sees Mallrat focusing more on good feels and themes as opposed to raw pop hooks. That's not to say the song isn't catchy - you're probably going to hear the hook in your head anytime somebody says anything remotely sounding like the title - but there is a greater focus on the raw honesty of her lyrics. Layers of guitar plink throughout, establishing a tone of hope and warmth - both in the summer sense and that feeling you get when you're with someone special. This vibe swells like the heart of a lover during the chorus, erupting into a wall of sound that just makes you want to run around barefoot with someone important.

'Better' has been in the works for over a year, according to Mallrat. "It’s taken most of this time to get it sounding exactly how it does in my head." It's safe to say this track is a true winner though, because it's parent tested and approved: "My dad says it’s his favourite song, which makes me very excited to share it with everyone.”

'Better' our first taste of Mallrat's sophomore EP which is due out in early 2018. If this track is anything to go by, you can expect a suite of tunes to make you want to love and dance all at once. If you can't wait, though, be sure to check out her tour dates below.
