Live Review: Golden Vessel slays more virtuous tunes in his new 'Right/Side' EP

GOLDEN VESSEL has finally released his highly anticipated sophomore Right/Side EP, and it is quite honestly everything we dreamed it would be.

GOLDEN VESSEL has finally released his highly anticipated sophomore Right/Side EP, and it is quite honestly everything we dreamed it would be.

This Brisbane native producer, also known as Max Byrne, exhibits a divergent assembly of  influences in his music through embracing rich pop, delicate soul and hip-hop rhythms sensibilities and shaping them into his own distinct, slow-burning lo-fi style.

The release of his debut Before Sleep EP last year was met with praise from many industry heavyweights and further garnered him a sincere following from Australian audiences. In addition to his killer run of performances throughout the year and his recent showcase at BIGSOUND, Max has been continuously writing and producing, and spent the last six months teasing fans with Right/Side’s first three leading singles.

‘Tell The-Girl’ ft. Emerson Leif, ‘Shoulders’ ft. elkkle & Mallrat and most recently ‘Less~More’ ft. OKBadlands were the first offerings of this wondrous Right/Side EP, instantly captivating listeners again and again with invigorating tones and fresh production aesthetics. Mixed by Tristan Hoogland (Woodes, Huntly, OKBadlands), this full 6-track EP introduces another three new works and demonstrates Golden Vessel’s exceptional and inherent ability to create diverse and distinctive music.

Max divulges: "It’s a collection of songs that I've written & recorded with my friends over the last year. It looks at navigating life and relationships, and trying to go against the grain where it's important."

‘Right/Side’, ‘Daylight’ (also featuring elkkle & Emerson Leif) and ‘Cylinder Snow’ form the other half of this latest EP, and offer juxtaposition to the punchier styles and pop sensibilities laid down in the EP’s first three single releases.

‘Right/Side’ is a tranquil assimilation of hip-hop rhythmic beats, soulful vocals and delicate melodic textures, layered amongst delicate piano motifs and gliding synth tones. This track is astoundingly soothing as it radiates iridescent sonic ambiences and heartening nuances through its tender lyrics and nostalgic lo-fi timbres.

‘Daylight’ revisits the vivacious pop and hip-hop sensibilities, interwoven with flourishes of sonic timbres that subtly temper through the gravity of the other tracks. This amalgamation of harmonious styles both foreshadows and brilliantly segues into ‘Cylinder Snow’, which employs oscillating synth pads and flickering sonic textures to assemble a thoroughly lush soundscape. Despite its electronic nature, this instrumental track harbours an ineffable organic ambiance and showcases the contrasting sonic boundaries that underlie the EP’s fusion of soundscapes.

Golden Vessel's Right/Side EP is out now via Exist. Recordings, so be sure to add it your playlist - we can guarantee it only gets better with every listen.
