Live Review: Anatole demonstrates an ocean of musical talent on 'Like Deep Water'
Sydney-based producer Anatole is back with intriguing new offering 'Like Deep Water', an ethereal track that warrants a second listen (at least.)
Sydney-based producer and multi-instrumentalist ANATOLE has just released his complex new single 'Like Deep Water' and announced his forthcoming debut album. The track is a feast for the ears, layering and blending unexpected sounds to create considerable depth, both musically and emotionally.
Anatole, real name Jonathan Baker, is not your typical electronic music producer. He grew up in the Blue Mountains and was heavily influenced by his natural environment, and he even takes his stage name from the ancient Greek word for sunrise. In fact, he has a background in classical music and studied trumpet at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. It wasn’t until a friend lent him a Flying Lotus record that he began experimenting with electronic sounds. After two independently released EPs, one of which which featured his breakthrough tune 'Colours', he has recently signed a deal with the UK-based record company, Mercury KX.
'Like Deep Water' features a piano sample from fellow Mercury KX artist, Ólafur Arnalds, as well as violin from Mishi Stern and vocals from Antonia Gauci. The sounds are atmospheric and experimental, but the combination between orchestral instruments and electronic sounds is not at all unpleasant. Anatole's subtle production technique lends itself to drama, and this track tells a wordless story, open to infinite interpretations. 'Like Deep Water' is both a throwback to Anatole's roots and a promising sign for his debut album. This is one to watch.
