That's A Wrap - Reflecting on #PS11

19 June 2017 | 10:17 am | Staff Writer

With over 20 acts, three stages, and literally hundreds of punters, Purple Sneakers once again celebrated our birthday in true style. Turning 11 years old as an official part of Vivid Sydney for the second year in a row, it was another night we'll never forget.

From Sortagoth tearing it up to a heaving crowd upstairs, to Keep It Disco's groove and funk filled set; Mowgli May throwing hip-hop vibes while Kimchi Princi let loose and Gussy made everyone move; SURG opening up the courtyard to an already swelling crowd to the euphoria of both Willaris. K and Purple Sneakers DJs closing sets, this was a night for the ages. The line outside was steadily wrapped around the block as Sydneysiders braved the cold to get in on the party action while inside was warmed up with sets from Christopher PortHeaps Gay DJsBad DeepKali PicnicVolumesTrench RecordsSidehustle, and our own team in Caitlin, Hannah & Holly.

Emerging artists OKBadlands showed exactly why they're ones to watch, while Sandro Dallarmi and Matka proved why they're leaders of Sydney's club and dance scene with their absolutely storming sets. Representing emerging talent and new music has always been our goal, and it’s what keeps us going, and it was sets like these that reminded us why we started this all in the first place.

After the resounding success of last year's birthday at which we celebrated a decade of Purple Sneakers, this year we couldn't help but feel the potential of Australian dance music has never been stronger, or more loved. Every single set was indicative of how strong not only Sydney's dance scene is, but how strong nationally it is. Purple Sneakers exists because of our love of discovering emerging artists, and our job is a hell of a lot easier thanks to the strength of the current crop of artists doing seriously amazing things right now.

A massive thank you goes to our presenting partners, Vivid Sydney and FBi Radio, as well as our sponsors Smirnoff and Young Henry's. Thank you to each and every artist who played and gave everything their all. Thank you to our team for being truly shining lights and helping us in every way they can. But, most importantly, thank you to everyone who came on the night, or any previous Purple Sneakers party. We wouldn't be here, celebrating 11 years, without you.

We encourage you to join our mailing list so you can be the first to find out when we announce our next event. In the meantime, keep finding out about new emerging club music with us through our website. Head here for a full gallery of photos from the night, thanks to James Simpson.
