‘Escape’ into a realm of intimacy with May Lyn’s new video
Hypnotic producer, songwriter, singer and more, MAY LYN has teamed up with visual artist ANNA LITWINOWICZ for her first music video. Together, this Brisbane team create an intriguing visual and sonic landscape that will make you dizzy with feeling.
The song is a gorgeous atmospheric RnB track reminiscent of FKA TWIGS in that her relaxed vocals and sensual lyrics float over a deep synth composition. May Lyn sings of being close with another person, and trying to feel comfortable and safe in a relationship.
The video explores these themes further as Litwinowicz portrays this raw intimacy in a grotesquely beautiful way. “Their heads are restricted, solely relying on touch, smell and taste, leading to their own heightened sensory experience,” she says of the clip.
The video follows the intensity of the song, keeping to more trippy scenes of bodies being mirrored and warped on screen in the verses, and speedy cuts and strobe effects in the chorus. Clips of the human form kissing, swimming, bound in gauze and dancing in cloth are transformed into abstract fleshy images.
The artists show us that intimacy and closeness, while beautiful, isn’t always comfortable. Even in shades of warm pinks and soft pastels it can be intense, heady and a little bit terrifying. May Lyn and Anna Litwinowicz are a perfect team here with one’s music and concept blending perfectly with the other’s visual style.
May Lyn was also the Queensland winner of triple J unearthed competition to collaborate with the National Institute of Dramatic Arts on a future music video so there’s more quality visuals in the pipeline, along with an upcoming EP to be released sometime this year.
