Live Review: ZEFGIRLCLUB haunts the club with debut release "PURGE"

Sydney's resident club angel ZEFGIRLCLUB, who you may have seen floating behind the decks at parties like Sidechains and Frequencies, has finally forayed into the world of production. Pulling from the dark, atmospheric club sounds she champions in her sets, her debut tune 'PURGE' is a spooky baile funk tinged thrill.

This track follows a simple hauntingly sweet hummed tune through a maze of gunfire, nuclear warnings and terrified crowds. The ambient sounds under the percussion and bass paint a menacing mental picture of a grim wasteland. Morphing between trap and baile funk, the change in beat make for a steady bop that also gives you a slight unsettling feeling.

ZEFGIRLCLUB evokes such a visceral response on listening with 'PURGE' and it immediately inspires a whole story for the listener. Dense with echoes and fuzzy background samples sounding like they're from the score of a horror film, the track is an all encompassing experience in headphones or in the club. For a debut release, ZEFGIRLCLUB has a very clear vision of what she wants to create, releasing a track that is pretty much without comparison.

'PURGE' features a lot of influences and samples, but is very specific to her sound with this first track setting the tone for works to come. With such a unique vision, a lot of drive and support from the local scene, we can be sure that this won't be the only new track from ZEFGIRLCLUB this year.
