Live Review: Nothing is better than 'IRL', SVSSY's new banger of desire

5 May 2017 | 11:01 am | Lloyd Crackett

Through the choral synths, unstoppable bass and warped voices of SVSSY's latest track - they've got one message 'They want you IRL'

Last time we checked in with SVSSY, it was Valentines Day. Hearts were a flutter and love was in the air, a Goldlink remix tempted us with all the sweetness of falling in love. But SVSSY isn’t all sweet, it’s not candies and chocolates for this club duo – SVSSY have returned to call through the screen and say they have a desire for something a little more ‘IRL’.

There’s something to be said about an altered voice asking for something In Real Life, asking for something to be realised in front of them – it’s an uncanny sort of feeling but it is entirely relatable. We live in the murky middle ground of reality; everyone we know, don’t know and dream of, exists online as symbolic versions of themselves with smooth edges and none of the mundane obstacles of being. We’ve all prepped ourselves to be dreamed about and SVSSY have tackled this with their new track ‘IRL’. Nodding both to the weird concept of ‘In Real Life’ as if it exists more than the online world, but as the idea of actually having someone really beside you, more importantly beside you in your bed. Even in the description on the Soundcloud, they give a vague proclamation:

'After the after party, when you’re stuck in the lobby of your mind, there's nowhere to go but online.

Lured by the light of a screen, a warm glow beckons you closer. Love is only a tap away.

If only this were IRL.'

It’s an ever relatable concept, IRL is one dreary place. It’s full of sensations, people and well, the world. Yet, the somewhat fantasy-land of the online world is where dreams grow. It’s surrounding this, this base concept of dreams, the inability to be real with them and feel their reality come true is what SVSSY’s ‘IRL’ is about. Through rough synths, a thick and slick bassline and vocals that collude with one another, looped and edited into the frenzy that emulates the release of desire. It’s in those gathering moments, as Claire sings ‘You dance around my head, while I lie in bed, for real’ – that the song becomes more than just a song for the club but captures the distinct feeling of want, but more so trying to will something to life. It's the theme song of the moment you know your desire is yet to be real, breaking out of that dreamy moment and still being alone.

It's not macabre, it's not melancholiac, the song is high octane. Without ever slowing down, it could easily have anyone you know raging on a Friday night and pushed to chase their golden-gilded crush. Because SVSSY's new track makes a convincing case, it may all be in your head but whats better than IRL.
