Live Review: PREMIERE: Ric Rufio's 'So Wonderful' video is a monochromatic wonderland

19 April 2017 | 9:00 am | Jackson Langford

If anyone is going to know how to smash a debut single well and truly out of the park, it is RIC RUFIO. With the experience and insider know-how that few new artists have the luxury of having, Ric Rufio has thrown his past of touring with the world's biggest artists - we're talking Adele here - as a backup vocalist into a melting pot with his youth spent listening to some of the greats of R'n'B, and given us a stunning debut single in 'So Wonderful' and an equally stunning visual to go alongside it.

With a genre such as R'n'B, it can be hard to translate it to a 2017 audience, but Ric Rufio, with an alarmingly similar narrative of emerging from the background to create thought-provoking R'n'B like that of queen FKA twigs, has emerged with gusto and fearlessness. 'So Wonderful' is a spacious, minimalist tune that sees Ric Rufio experiment with an electronic, futuristic sound that swirls beautifully with the classic R'n'B vocal stylings of yesteryear. The song is huge and explosive without doing too much at all, which is perfectly reflected in the video.

With the entire thing consisting only of only black and white colours, the trippy visual is both entrancing and off-putting in the best way possible. It's a gloomy, psychedelic viewing experience that compliments each aspect of the song perfectly.
