Live Review: NNIFTY drops stunning debut single 'Kooka'

1 March 2017 | 8:47 am | Jackson Langford

You know that feeling you get when you hear a song for the first time and it just takes over every extension of your body? Your fingers go numb, your ears open wide and you become completely oblivious to any detail that is going on around you. It stops being a listen and becomes a complete, full body experience - what all the best art should do. That is exactly what NNIFTY has done with his stunning debut single, 'Kooka.'

The opening minute of the ethereal track sounds like a 2017 interpretation of two of the greatest scores of all time - Blade Runner and Twin Peaks. NNIFTY, whether intentional or not, has coated this all-encompassing track with the essence of what the future might sound like and put his own bleak twist on it. It has an overwhelmingly surrealist, eerie feel, as the understated synths that sprinkle delicately in the first few seconds evolve into heavy explosive drops as the song traverses its futuristic dystopian soundscape. The final product is dark, ominous and completely submerged in bass - kind of like if Flume and David Lynch had a child.

What NNIFTY has done with 'Kooka' is something a lot of veterans still struggle to come to terms with - making music that impacts senses beyond hearing. As the bass vibrates through your bones, and you close your eyes as the synths splash hues of purple and navy in your mind, NNIFTY has ensured that you won't be forgetting about 'Kooka' any time soon.
