Live Review: Muki drops super sweet single, 'Sassaparilla'

30 March 2017 | 8:00 am | Rosie Rae

Sydney’s rising alt-pop star MUKI has dropped a tasty alt-pop single, 'Sassaparilla' that sounds like it's been delivered straight from the future. ‘Sassaparilla’ is the follow up to her vocal feature on PACES and YVNG JALAPENO’s track, ‘In Control.’ Don’t let her cutesy exterior fool you, Muki has some strong ideas to express.

Establishing yourself in an already saturated market can be hard, but Muki has definitely found a space for her unique brand of pop. “'Sassaparilla' is about giving oneself permission to not be another chain in the scene, but allowing yourself to express your individuality. I wrote it out of frustration. I would go to these social events and everyone would look the same, talk the same, and butt-lick each other,” Muki commented. Already making waves Muki has played on some of Australia's biggest festival stages including Splendour in The Grass, as well as Brisbane's BIGSOUND.

Muki draws from a unique range of influences in 'Sassaparilla.' Initially the track pulls you in with it's distinctly futuristic K-pop flavour with stylised, hyper-real vocal loops, and electronic flourishes that sound like they belong in an an arcade game. The broken percussion, and gentle bubbling background sounds really inject 'Sassaparilla' with it's refreshing soda pop sound.
