Kate Martin takes us on a stroll through her fave Melbourne street

22 March 2017 | 8:00 am | Jackson Langford

When you aren't born and raised in a city, but instead relocate there later in life, it can be hard to be in the know about that city's hidden gems. However, despite being a Townsville native, indie-pop darling KATE MARTIN has moved to Melbourne and has immersed herself completely in the Australia's art capital and let it blossom through her music.

Her latest offering 'Set My Life To Fire' is soothing, stunning pop at its finest and is about learning our place in the world. If Kate Martin's place in the world is indeed Melbourne, then we're sure we can expect plenty more beautiful tracks from her in the near future.

The centrepiece of Kate Martin's love of Melbourne is Gertrude St., and she's given us a rundown of the most essential spots that made an impression on her when she moved in 2012.

Archie’s All Day

189 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

My favourite café in Fitzroy. 10/10 coffee, breakfasts and smoothies. There’s always cute dogs sitting out front too!

Aunt Maggie’s Organics

188 Gertude St, Fitzroy

Really cute organic grocer. They also sell flowers and most importantly peanut butter CLIF bars!

Dean’s Art

188 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

My favourite art supplies store in Melbourne. I always come here to buy graphic markers for my drawings.

Fatto A Mano

228 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

Best. Bakery. Ever. It’s a little red building next door to Beach Burrito and it’s always packed out at lunchtime, for good reason… I recommend the turkey and cranberry baguette!

Kit & Ace

161 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

This place is great for your wardrobe staples. I went to an event hosted by Kit & Ace at Melbourne Music Week in 2015 combining live music and epic art installations spread throughout the old Women’s Hospital. It was a very cool night.

The Lair

122 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

The Lair boasts an impressive collection of handmade Australian designer wear. Definitely don’t venture in there if you’re trying to save money!

Northside Records

236 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

I like this record store because they have a diverse and wide range of music. There’s also a pre-loved and $1 vinyl section which is cool because you never know what treasure you might discover.
