Live Review: Sui Zhen and the art of 'Hangin' On'

23 February 2017 | 4:44 pm | Rosie Rae

Sui Zhen touches on feelings of frustration from being in limbo in her new video and single for 'Hangin' On' before she heads over to the US for SXSW.

Over the past few years we've gotten to know Sui Zhen and seen a vast evolution, in both her music and conceptually. It's safe to say that she has captured our hearts, she truly is one Australians true pioneering female artists, tackling high concepts and femininity with her own distinctive brand of pop. Now, she's set to do it all again with the release of her new video clip for 'Hangin' On'.

In 'Hangin' On,' Sui Zhen addresses complicated subjects of identity and nature, and where they intercept. Like in many of her works, she builds a persona to highlight a crisis of connection, literally and figuratively. Don't let the soft pastels and lush greenery fool you, there's an important message about gender essentialism wrapped in this beautifully wrapped package.

As far as concepts go, Sui Zhen really touches on a nerve about that frustrating feeling of limbo. Let's be honest, there's nothing worse than being caught waiting, whether this relates to a relationship or is simply a metaphor for something more existential. Whilst pop in flavour, the use of the primal elements, and playful flute give this song a real poetic feel.
