Purple Sneakers’ genre free groovers guide to Secret Garden
This month has kicked off in true February style with blistering heat and a serious dose of post-holiday depression, so we couldn’t be more excited to frolic in the forest for another edition of Secret Garden Festival. Nestled on a farm in Brownlow Hill, just west of Sydney awaits a cultural experience like no other. Colourful costumes, decorations and personalities take centre stage at what can only be described as “festival nirvana.” As always there’s an amazing lineup, with a little something for everyone. Whilst there’s always fine local talent at festival of this size, what separates Secret Garden from the rest is how much variety is on display in terms of genre. Catering to punters from all walks of life, they offer up a veritable smorgasbord of aural treats, and it further cements their reputation as one of the most diverse festivals around. While we’ll be playing at The Wrangler Pub stage over Friday, Saturday and Sunday to ease yourself into the days, there is so much on offer from the festival waiting for you.
We love musical diversity here at Purple Sneakers, so we’ve made a comprehensive list of 5 local acts which are pretty much killing it in their genres and will all be whipping the forest floors into a frenzy with what are sure to be some epic sets…
What began as a humble series of inner West house parties soon blossomed into a groovy collective and community. Based around the essence of old school funk, soul and disco this crew are as bold and colourful as they are musical. Dance and fashion have always been just as much a part of the overall theatrics of any Mansion Lane event. The Mansion Lane crew will be taking over the Fortuna Deluxe stage on Saturday night from 11pm.
Colourful, queer and iconic are words that spring to mind when talking about the Sydney duo Stereogamous. From the depths of the Tokyo Sing Song Basement in Newtown, to the official Mardi Gras party, this duo always light up the dance floors with their upbeat house classics. You can get a piece of the action live at the Camp Queen stage on Saturday night from 11pm.
Sydney based social influencer and fierce advocate for self love, FlexMami has been been pushing the boundaries and redefining DJ culture since she sashayed into the game. Much like her style, FlexMami‘s DJ sets are iconic, all bangers, and no fillers, just booty shaking party classics. You can catch FlexMami spinning classic tracks at the Carmen Verandah stage on Friday from 8pm.
From the sweaty GOODGOD danceteria to the depths of Sydney’s inner west, Keep It Disco have had Sydney siders grooving since the very beginning. Aside from an excellent selection of groovy disco classics there’s never anything but love on the Keep It Disco dance floor. You can catch the Keep It Disco crew playing at the Fortuna Deluxe stage from 9pm on Friday night.
One of our favourite artists at the festival, has been flying relatively under the radar. Hot on the Sydney’s underground warehouse circuit, Lewba’s really developed a signature flavour. If enjoy some grimey 4 to the floor house then, we recommend you check out his set, he’s on at the Primordal Soupsphere at midnight.
