Live Review: Simo Soo releases punchy new track 'Ropes'

2 February 2017 | 5:38 pm | Natalie Turner

The wonderful Sydney rapper and producer Simo Soo has gracefully welcomed our inner freaks to the surface once again with his track ‘Ropes’.

The weird, the wacky, the wonderful that is Sydney rapper and producer SIMO SOO has gracefully welcomed our inner freaks to the surface once again with their fresh, in yo face track ‘Ropes’.

The track opens with clicking synths and wind chiming samples before Soo’s distinct, early Mickey Avalon/Das Racist vibe vocals dive in with confidence. The chorus has a super punchy beat and a level of originality from both production and vocals that leaves you sitting high above the clouds and, like a wild ride, continues upwards before exploding with spectacular speed and intensity- and there's more to come!

Like Oprah with her cars, Soo is throwing endless amounts of gifts our way, as the new single comes as part one of a two part series of blessings to listeners. Soo is set to release a live stream of a new record via Instagram, entitled, "We’ve All Been Tricked Into Thinking This Reality Is Normal & Acceptable, It’s Not. Your Anxiety Is Real & Bugging Out Is A Correct Result." Honestly, the name alone has us hooked.

Now we’ve seen some pretty intense tactical moves from artists in their final stages of album/EP/mixtape releases (looking at you Frank Ocean) which hypes fans up so much they’re just bursting with anticipation. However, for Simo Soo, this was not just a cleverly devised artistic ploy to engage listeners. In true Soo style, it goes deeper than that. They want to showcase the behind-the-scenes blood, sweat and tears that goes into a production, with a less than sparkling budget.

“I wanted to show everything that goes into making a record, especially when you’re someone with no budget recording in your lounge room. People see making an album as this magical really technical process done in a week but really it’s actually in between super interesting moments of amazing and obsessively editing a phrase or line to perfection that goes forever. I want it to be like punk rap ASMR."

Soo also mentions their production process as they work around some environmental setbacks, saying “recording at home is a kinda awkward process, like you have housemates and they may not particularly like your music so it adds this level of shyness or trying to be aware of others that you gotta overcome or you’ll never get it done."

And boy did the shyness disappear, with ‘Ropes’ becoming not only a symbol for creative individuality and forward thinking, but an epic taste of what’s to come when the full record is released this month. Set to which feature collaborations from Yon Yonson, Bilby, Sissi Reagan, Marcus Whale and more, this is going to be truly remarkable. Grab the ‘Ropes’ with both hands and have a listen!
