Live Review: May Lyn has found the balance on "First"

21 February 2017 | 8:11 am | Steve Copp

Malaysian born Brisbabe May Lyn has found the perfect balance between stunning melody and enlightened discourse in her new single "First".

2016 brought us a jam packed selection of ridiculously talented female artists and 2017 isn't slowing up. Brisbane artist MAY LYN has absolutely hit the mark with her newest 'First'

This is the second single released from her upcoming EP, Vessel. With the vocal grace of modern RnB mainstay BANKS, she speaks of being trapped in human constructs that live purely to serve the norm. In one foul swoop she hits with earth-shattering sentiment, singable melody and a crushing down-tempo instrumental. She has brought an AK-47 to a knife fight.

From the very first listen through, this queen of hypnosis has you stuck. Somehow you subconsciously learn all the lyrics, and the chorus is so melodic and rich you have no choice but to replay or keep the show going yourself. This mix of conscious lyrics, earthy melody and softly structured accompaniments gives Lyn access to all areas of your feels. Her intent never falters in the song's entirety. Her versatile song-writing skills is compounded with lush production; deep vibey 808's and syncopated top end percussion give way to howling electric guitar and the most mesmerising chorus.

"Below the surface no one really knows what they want or what they deserve," Lyn's lyrics hit with an astounding resonance.

A mix of fresh ingenuity and the skills of an old have the buzz around the upcoming EP vibrating ferociously. Lyn's skill and style set are growing ever closer to being fully realised, and this new work might just be the piece to shoot her into success.

Be part of the changing times in the landscape of Australian music, and get a hold of May Lyn's newest 'First'.
