Live Review: PREMIERE: Yon Yonson will surprise you with new single 'This Evening'

Sydney trio YON YONSON have continued to impress us over the past few months. With singles 'Berlin' and 'Call It Something I Ate' doing the rounds and receiving critical acclaim, they are now primed and ready for the release of their fourth album, Yes No Sorry. This will be released through independent label, TEEF, and although it's just about to drop, they have managed to sneak in one last single before it does.

'This Evening' is a tune that sneaks up on you. Yon Yonson once again demonstrate their impeccable knack for perfect songwriting, and create an arrangement that starts off with some sparse, gentle piano keys, before evolving into something so much more. Their Aussie twang, which can sometimes be grating or irritating, is anything but here, and instead evokes imagery as they detail their pensive self-reflection.

It's a deviation from what we know of the guys, but a welcome one at that. As the piano ballad pauses, the glitchy, spacious soundscape comes into play. Layers on layers of meticulously crafted electronica fold over each other, with the sentimental lyrics looped over.

With Yes No Sorry out February 10th, this song has made us even more excited for this album. Having made a name for themselves thanks to their songwriting abilities and creativity, it's a logical progression for the trio as they cement their reputation as true innovators. We can't bloody wait.
