Live Review: Noah Slee gives a smooth rework to 'Love Come Down'

19 January 2017 | 2:47 pm | Jackson Langford

We at Purple Sneakers are no stranger to the work of NOAH SLEE. His crisp production and his meticulous approach to smooth, soulful melodies has not once failed to impress us and his latest effort is no exception. He's taken on the mammoth task of putting his own sexy spin on Evelyn King's massive disco hit of the 80's, 'Love Come Down', and, to the surprise of no-one, has absolutely hit the nail on the head.

If you haven't heard the original, Evelyn King's soothing vocals, which evoke the sounds that are now found in the likes of Solange, weaves sensually through the heavy funk melody and the strutting bass. It's a real bop that is kind of like the cooler, older sister of 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody'.

Noah Slee's take on the tune, however, completely places it in an entirely new context. It's a slow burner, set over a light crackling, that is more En Vogue than Evelyn King. His lush, unwavering vocals are hypnotising, as the once-colossal sounding song has been stripped away of the maximalism in way of a more subtle approach. Towards the end, the percussion starts to hit and the song takes on new life once more, swapping out the sombre intro for a far more upbeat and evocative finale.
