Artists to Watch in 2017: The Tapes

9 January 2017 | 8:00 am | Amie Mulhearn

Sydney duo the tapes and their seriously infectious synth pop was a welcome edition to the year and PS can't wait to hear more from the tapes.

Producer Mickey Kojak alongside Andrew Grant are certainly not new on the scene. However, 2016 saw them combine their powers and embark on a new project - The Tapes. Together they have made a downright gallant attempt at breathing some positive vibes into a somewhat morbid year with their positively infectious brand of synth pop. When describing The Tapes, the boys have said it is music to be listened to through an FM radio of a convertible that is cruising down a pristine coastline - destination unknown.

The debut single, 'At All', is a little too easy to get into. It is a dreamy tangle of delicate synths with a minimalist loop of percussions and a comforting vocal that keeps the whole thing inherently groovy. Just a few months later, The Tapes were back for round two with their second single, 'You Know It’s Real', and what a triumph it was. The boys bumped up the tempo like it’s 2007 taking some cues from the James Murphy’s and the Alexis Taylor’s of the world. The result is nothing short of sundrenched bliss - sitting towards the pop end of the electronic spectrum, leaving this writer with the distinct impression that if we were ever to meet, we could be mates.

Finishing off the year strong, The Tapes released a self titled debut EP which featured an additional three more chilled out tracks. What gets me the most excited for what’s in store for The Tapes in the future is their live show. The did a damn fine job playing to a packed out Civic Underground in Sydney for their debut showcase as well as a slot at this year's EMC Play. This writer cannot wait to hit the dance floor with these guys again and again! Cannot wait for more.
