Artists To Watch in 2017: Austen

2 January 2017 | 8:00 am | Abbey Lenton

If only a few months between singles has allowed such opportunity for growing and flourishing, 2017 will surely make for the perfect canvas for Austen.

This year provided the opportunity for many artists to really earn their stripes in the industry. So much so, that they pique our attention enough for us to pin them as an artist to watch in 2017. AUSTEN may have only released two singles, but those singles are so damn solid that she has no doubt earned her place on this list. Two tracks down and a world to go, we look back on what made her entry into the Australian music scene such a special one.

'Faded' dropped in February, and was a tantalising debut. The song is awash with subdued melodies and layers of depth. And, it has a drop so well curated, it would be in good company amongst those far more experienced than the young performer. 'Faded' earned itself a legion of support from the Soundcloud community and turned heads immediately.

Several months on, Austen's second effort, 'Darkside', was released toward the latter half of the year. Her growth as an artist, both musically and marketably, has been phenomenal. From small things like the cover art, to integral elements like the production value: everything about the musician has become sharper and more mature.

Along with 'Darkside' came an encapsulating video clip and a list of tour dates around Australia's east coast. A flurry of touch and motion, the music video is minimal in approach, but powerful in content. With each tour date came a surge of new fans, proving that if Austen can sustain that much hype around a single launch, what she has in store for an EP or even album is going to be astounding.

If only a few months between singles has allowed such opportunity for growing and flourishing, 2017 will surely make for the perfect canvas for Austen to create upon.
