Artists to Watch in 2017: Fortunes.

29 December 2016 | 8:40 am | Steve Copp

Melbourne based, New Zealand born revolutionaries Fortunes are coming in hot and set to have a massive 2017, we're about to tell you why.

As far as new artists go, there are few more exciting and with more potential than Melbourne based duo FORTUNES. This excitement machine consists of New Zealand born CONOR MCCABE and BARNABY MATTHEWS. Growing up in the spiritual oasis that is New Zealand, then relocating to Melbourne, both home cultures are represented in their unique blend of musical blessings.

McCabe's vocals will be what gets you. From the first word to the last of every song, the Melbournian crooner has your undivided attention and reciprocates this devotion. McCabe is never shy to let his love and light shine and no one is mad about it- at all.

McCabe swoons with the smooth tones of a hybrid lovechild of Polynesian songbird STAN WALKER, and SILVERCHAIR lead and post-grunge icon DANIEL JOHNS. An exciting thought I know, but the best part is you don't have to wonder what that might sound like. McCabe and Matthews will be more than happy to produce an example.

Their most recent EP, Jacket, was a home run. The sensuality of 'Bomber', to the infectious groove and soulful melody of 'Justin Bieber', and the modern day version of standing outside your crush's window with a boom-box, 'FKWTU', every single song on that EP showcases a new and exciting side of Fortunes. The final two tracks show a softer side to Matthews & Mccabe, in 'Angel' and 'Energy', which both cap off this perfectly executed body of work.

Fortunes. are ready-made superstars, Matthews' production is well beyond the level of stardom they've found thus far, and McCabe's vocals could fight their way through any soundscape. His sound has no other choice but to land right in your ears. Every single Fortunes. track is a must listen. Only two EP's along, and a recent signing to Future Classic, these boys have everything to prove and nothing to lose.

On individuality alone, they score 10's everywhere they go. It's hard to think they have any competition with a sound as unique as theirs. When they'll be playing the biggest stages near you, seems only a matter of time for these New Zealand born game-changers.

Each and every time they release new music it has matured exponentially. Like a fine wine, the Melbourne artists seem to getting better and better in massive increments across a short period of time.

FORTUNES. are absolutely an act to keep your eyes and most importantly your ears on in 2017.
