Spit Syndicate's guide to Sydney's Inner West

29 November 2016 | 5:36 pm | Emma Jones

They're heralded as one of Australia's most dynamic hip-hop duos, and they're certainly doing all they can to prove this entirely correct. SPIT SYNDICATE have emerged this year, as a fully fledged force to be reckoned with. Levelling up and carving out their own place in the Australian musical landscape, they have strived and delivered an alternative to what can be a saturated sound.

Using fresh beats and their trademark wit in their lyrics, Spit Syndicate have pushed themselves to be more, and with the likes of their recent singles "Inhibitions," and before that, "Know Better," they've infused a variety of influences into their evolved sound. Now, signing to Inertia Music, things are looking set to only get bigger and better for these guys, so we decided to get to know them a little better. Spilling the beans on their favourite places to frequent in Sydney's Inner West, you can get to know Spit Syndicate a little better too - before they're absolutely everywhere.

Lady Hampshire

Great atmosphere, some of the dopest Sydney artists featured throughout, and a ‘No Gronks’ policy 7 days out the week.

From the team behind The Lord Gladstone in Chippendale comes The Lady Hampshire in Camperdown. We first met these guys when we started doing One Day Sundays at The Vic in Marrickville and they’ve since become our family. When it comes to blending pubs, music, art, food & dranks, and private jets to Splendour, these guys are the masters. The Lady has a huge courtyard, dining room, dance floor and a great atmopshere generally. You’d be hard pressed to find a venue team who are more supportive of the local arts scene, here’s proof: the top floor of Lady Hampshire will be an artist/studio residency for some of Sydney’s top artists/bands including Jimmy Nice (churr), Joyride, DMAs, Kanas Smeaton to name a few!

Leichhardt Pool

If you grew up in the Inner West, chances are you visited Leichhardt Pool at some point, a swimming carnival, a hot Summer’s day, a friend’s birthday party. Our favourite time to visit, though, has always been after hours - sneaking into Leichhardt Pool at night to climb the diving board was a ritual for us and our crew growing up. Hard to beat being up on the 10m diving board with the glimmering lights of the Inner West all around you.

We had a bit of a bender the night of Obama’s inauguration in 2008 that featured an incredible after-hours Leichhardt pool sesh. A return trip to Leichhardt Pool is perhaps the only good thing that might come out of a Trump Presidency.

Elkington Park (Dawn Fraser Pool)

Elkington Park, or Dawny as it’s referred to by many folks in the I-Dub, is a true Sydney gem. Rolling grass hills, a pergola, the ultimate ocean pool, tanning deck, phospherescene - this place has it all. Our boy Kai from Jackie Onassis got married at this spot last year which was a beautiful moment!

yumcha

Hung Cheung, Marrickville

Yum Cha, what’s fucking with it? Hung Cheung is THE place to get your Yum Cha fix in the Inner West. We’ve been frequenting the place since we were kids. They caught some bad press from A Current Affair a few years back over some baseless allegations regarding hygiene, but we’re riding with 'em regardless.
