Live Review: 'Pull Up' to Abra's magical world

14 November 2016 | 2:47 pm | Lloyd Crackett

‘Pull Up’ is an invitation into the magical world of Abra and the first single from her latest PRINCESS EP out on True Panther Sounds/Remote Control.

‘Pull Up’ is an invitation into the magical world of Abra. Being a self-directed and self-edited music video clip, it is clear that Abra has a vision and is creating the world she wants you to see her in.

Taken from her Princess EP (which is also just about all made by Abra),'Pull Up' features 808s, twinkling synths and RnB style vocals. The clip features Abra and friends exploring NYC at night, and you quickly understand that Abra is following her own rules. She’s got a kingdom in which she has crowned herself princess.

Abra’s music video for ‘Pull Up’ was created in collaboration with Fader Magazine and ASAP Tyy. It’s a visual representation of the 'Sure Why Not' attitude to a good night, featuring scenes of partying in motel rooms, on the back of four-wheelers and hanging out with her equally cool friends. Abra created a video that was about the getting good lifestyle, in which you give the right amount of shit and you get what you want. She's self-assured and one to watch.

‘Pull Up’ is Abra’s signature blend of 80s nostalgic bedroom produced pop. Abra’s EP is a labour of love and you can hear it in every song, with drum beats meticulously planned yet still rough in their production and vocals that range from RnB to almost choral like layering.

‘Crybaby’ is a standout track, it’s self-possessed and earnest while working through Abra’s vocal range. On it, she’s emotionally honest without sacrificing a good beat, and when she cries out, "Banging on your walls, I go up and down," you want to sing along like its upbeat. It’s Abra ability to never be singular that makes her great. Her music is never doing just one thing, it is a blend of carefully curated influences. The Princess EP also features Tommy Genesis on 'Big Boi' which is Abra’s almost sinister rap, chanting over and over, “You’re a big boi, but you’re not gone be my man. Flexing your position but I’m not a fan.” It’s yet another ode to Abra’s independence. She’s self-produced, self-described and self-driven. Abra creates her own world and you’ll never be abled to forget it.

Abra’s Princess EP is out now and available on through Remote Control. Abra will also be playing the Pitch Music Festival in Victoria on the 10-13th of March 2017. Tickets available here.
