Enter the weird world of Habits with this beautifully bizarre mash-up mix
A habit is the formation of one’s revisited act. Hard to shake off, it survives as routine and pattern; addiction. Pluralise the form, and you’re gifted Melbourne duo, HABITS.
Taking a firm liking to down-tempo electronic pop, Mo and Maia of the outfit have enabled contradictory characters in the voice of their sound, through the approach and control of the way their material is composed. Where a track may sound rather thick and elaborate, the quantity of instruments is few; something you may pick up on when listening to their debut EP, Ugly Cry.
Offering six original tracks, followed by a handful of remixes, Habits team up with vocalist, Grace Butterworth, before some songs are reimagined by Air Max ’97, me_irl and Catlips. An important packet of tunes that stand alongside one another colourfully, immerse yourself in the variety at hand.
Veering away from their own songwriting for a hot minute, Habits have kindly thrown together a huge Guest Mix for us. Including newbies and classic gems for a beautifully bizarre mash-up, dedicate some time to this creative concoction.
Be sure to catch Habits at Bigsound this week. They’ll be performing alongside Rainbow Chan at Heya Bar on Wednesday, 7th September, as well as the Woolly Mammoth on Friday, 9th September for the launch of Mellum – a new publicity firm with a difference.
