Live Review: Yuma X 'Smoke Trails' (Reprise)

14 December 2015 | 2:05 pm | Emma Jones

Sydney duo have shared a brand new track today titled 'Smoke Trails (Reprise)'. Slow, commanding and truly stunning, this is an act to keep your eye on!

Whilst we still don't really know much about YUMA X, what we do know is that the duo make some really nice tunes. The mysterious Sydney duo seemingly popped up out of nowhere earlier this year, and have gone on to have their very few tunes played millions of times.

First we had 'Swimming Pool', then we had 'Matchstick', and now, perhaps their best track yet, we have 'Smoke Trails'.

Although it only clocks in at 1:59 minutes, Yuma X have fit in more than enough to make it a very full two minutes indeed. Lead singer Lucy Washington's delicate voice floats softly over the gentle piano chords, the smoky air filled with seduction and allure. The sparse introduction goes on for long enough that when the rest of the track kicks into gear, it catches you off guard.

Expertly arranged, the suddenly complete sounding track tugs on your heartstrings, pulling you further and further into their world. It's spacious, but never empty in it's delivery, and although it's their shortest release yet, it could definitely be their best too.

Said to be readying a four-track EP titled Home Recordings, it seems like this duo won't be mysterious for too much longer. They've just finished touring the country with RUFUS as well, and while there has been no official word on when we can expect Home Recordings, one saving grace is that we now have one more track to tide us over until then. Let's just hope it's soon!
