Live Review: The Japanese House 'Cool Blue' (Official Video)

1 October 2015 | 5:45 pm | Katie Rowley

The Japanese House's dreamy new video for 'Cool Blue' looks like outtake footage from an episode of The O.C. Score!

THE JAPANESE HOUSE, aka 19 year old Amber Bain from London, has just unveiled the visuals for ‘Cool Blue’, the lead single from her forthcoming EP Clean.

The video was shot with a misty blue lens filter while Amber was travelling through Europe, and taps into the classic road trip genre that we’re very accustomed to, but not yet bored of, seeing.

Skateboards, fair grounds and piers all make recurring appearances, dabbled amongst shots of grand continental architecture that could only come from the sun-kissed vistas of Spain, Italy, South France, etc. The footage starts as black and white, before gently acquiescing into a cool blue tinge when the drum work kicks in. Hey, maybe it’s a homage to Picasso’s blue period. Maybe. Maybe blue just looks like a cool Instagram filter.

The Japanese House sounds undeniably similar to Imogen Heap. But I think that’s ok, because frankly Imogen Heap was very The O.C and we’ve moved on from that…right guys? We’ve moved on, haven’t we??

Whether or not we can ever move on from The O.C (and the video for ‘Cool Blue’ really isn’t helping the healing process, thanks for the nostalgic looking sun, sea and skateboarding Amber, we’d just forgotten all about Seth Cohen and his boyish charms), we hope The Japanese House keeps making music and videos like this. They’re beautiful and calming and intimate and there’s always a place for that in our day.

Clean EP will be released on November 6 via Dirty Hit.
