Live Review: Loyle Carner 'Florence' Ft. Kwes

1 September 2015 | 11:34 am | Emma Jones

UK MC Loyle Carner is one to watch and shows what he's really capable of in the stripped back and toned down new single, 'Florence', featuring Kwes.

He's already got nods of approval from the likes of Joey Bada$$ and MF Doom, and has been on a steady but rapid rise over the last few years as each release gets better than the last. Now, it seems he's really starting to kick things into gear with the release of his latest single 'Florence'.

Teaming up with KWESLOYLE CARNER has just dropped one of his best tracks of his young but exciting career, and it could also be one of his most simplistic too.

Rapping over just a crisp singular drum beat and a easygoing piano melody, Carner and Kwes work seamlessly together to bring this track to life; a track written about the fact that Carner as "always wanted a little sister". His rhymes are delivered with such a skill that, although expertly done, convey a certain emotional quality that can be lost in some hip hop artists.

Emotive and clean, Carner effortlessly glides over the pure and soft track; his verses interspersed with a soulful hook tying it all together. It's the subtlety of 'Florence' that draws you in, with it's tender warmth and refined sweetness all the while letting each element have room to breathe.

'Florence' was released last week as part of a double A-side single along with the previously released 'Tierney Terrace' via Transgressive imprint ParadYse records. He's also signed on with AMF Records, and is tipped to be releasing more material soon, so it's definitely all systems go for Loyle Carner. Let's just hope he continues releasing gorgeous gems like this for the foreseeable future!
