Live Review: Kelela 'Rewind'

6 September 2015 | 10:00 am | Emma Jones

Kelela once again shows what she's made of with a Janet Jackson-esque new single 'Rewind' ahead of the release of her forthcoming 'Hallucinogen' EP.

It's no secret that we here at Purple Sneakers are huge fans of KELELA, so any new material to come from her is definitely a very good thing in our books. However, it's even better when the new material is as good as her latest track, 'Rewind'. Reaffirming her status as the queen of future R&B, 'Rewind' is yet another example of just how much Kelela has going on, and why we love her so much.

Crisp beats, a seductive bass line and Kelela's trademark Janet Jackson-esque vocals are the key ingredients for this track, and the combination of these is what makes it so good. Teaming up with regular collaborator Kingdom for production duties (as well as production credits going to Nuggets and Kelela herself), the unstoppable force that is Kingdom and Kelela is in full swing with 'Rewind'.

Sexy, slick, and sophisticated, 'Rewind' is an instant hit with it's familiar R&B stylings but unique and innovative take. This is how R&B should be done. Kelela sings about love and loss, and she said of the track, "It speaks to the narcotic that is loving someone. It makes you exhilarated, it makes you feel drained, it's in your body and it affects you so completely." Perfectly captured, Kelela transmits those emotions so well through her vocals, backing it up with smooth and smoky production.

'Rewind' is taken from Kelela's forthcoming EP, Hallucinogen, which is released October 9 via her own Cherry Coffee imprint and Warp Records. It's the second single off the record, following the also astounding 'A Message'. It goes without saying how excited we are for this EP, and 'Rewind' is making it even harder to contain ourselves.
