Wrap Up: Splendour In The Grass 2015

7 August 2015 | 3:25 pm | Lauren Payne

Splendour In The Grass 2015 was flawless, even with a bit of mud, and I can honestly say that this gal will definitely be ready for more goodness in 2016.

There are a few things that can be directly associated with Splendour In the Grass. An amazing line up, picturesque location, delicious food, even more delicious drinks and of course, mud.

When the tickets finally go on sale and you snag you're very own receipt to happiness, everyone will tell you to take gum boots because you never know what the weather is going to do during the most anticipated Australian music festival of the year.

Despite warnings of rain, the Byron Bay showgrounds quickly became flooded with festival goers on the Friday morning who, as expected, sported the ever important gumboots. The first day of Splendour 2015 boasted an epic line-up that would end up blowing everyone away.

After the unexpected loss of an international act, Brisbane duo DZ DEATHRAYS proved they were perfect last minute additions to the line-up by thrashing out tracks from their ARIA-winning album Black Rat and some of their old favourites. CLIENT LIAISON lit up the Mix Up stage with their energising beats and even brought a few dancers onto the stage to.. well, sex things up a tad and finally MARK RONSON- the man who has basically taken over the music world- dropped cameo after cameo as he closed the day, bringing out such musical geniuses as KIRIN J CALLINAN and TAME IMPALA's own Kevin Parker, to show Australia what the true meaning for "squad goals" is.

Saturday saw a few of our own Purple Sneakers crew joining DUNE RATS as they played the Ampitheatre. Our own Jess Holton gave them her seal of approval, "The rat in a ball was possibly the funniest thing I've seen all year", as did Hannah Galvin stating, "with two large inflatable men [most probably stolen from your local car dealer] nudie runs and dirty beach balls punching you in the face, and you've got a muddy head full of sweet attainable memories from Splendour In The Grass 2015". The day followed on with MICKEY KOJAK killing his performance on the Tiny Dancer stage after TOTAL GIOVANNI basically destroyed the hook, rather than just being off it. PURITY RING played a magical set on the Mix Up stage and were quickly followed by the sweet sounds of ARA KOUFAX who gave the tent a bit of groove before other great acts took to the stage.

With all the main stages taking charge on Friday and Saturday, it seemed as though Sunday was the day that the smaller stages at Splendour had time to shine. The Tiny Dancer stage overflowed with talent as UV BOI, DUGONG JR and ELIZABETH ROSE all entranced punters as MO and SET MO pumped up the adjacent Mix Up tent. The Red Bull Music Academy allowed TOTAL GIOVANNI another chance to shine before SABLE and SHLOMO also showed the festival what they had to offer.

As TAME IMPALA began literally blowing the minds of the Amphitheater crowd (and fellow Purple Sneakers writers Emma Jones and Caitlin Medcalf) and XAVIER RUDD & THE UNITED NATIONS dismissing the BLUR onlookers and showering the very full GW McLennan tent with warmth, some punters were busy dancing in the Smirnoff Tent that not only provided comfortable turf outside to chill out on, but also had DJs creating an exciting buzz throughout the festival.

With a 4-day lineup curated by Elsewhere, Cant Say, Akimbo and One Day, the tent featured legends from across the country including BUTCHER, TRANTER and BENSON. As the festival drew to a close, JOYRIDE kept the Splendour spirit going with a two-hour set in the Smirnoff tent and ending a weekend that can only be described as crazy.

Splendour In The Grass 2015 was flawless, even with a bit of mud, and I can honestly say that this gal will definitely be ready for more gooey goodness in 2016.
