A few weeks ago we introduced you to YOUNGS ‘Serasan Shakes’, a deep and intricate future bass track. The boys have now released the video for the song, bringing to life the confusion of mental disorders and the harmful side effects certain treatments can have.

The video for ‘Serasan Shakes’ was directed by Sami ‘Misklectic’ Sommariva who has worked with the likes of Flying Lotus and Sleep D. Keen eyes may note the clip was partially filmed at the University of Melbourne, and there is scenes that look either like a padded room in a mental facility, or for a more light-hearted approach to a very serious piece of art, a room padded by blown up goon sacks.

With lyrics and a theme that focus on depression and grief it is very hard to create something that people can both relate to, or begin to understand the mayhem that can be caused by mental pain, and consequently a medication such as Serasan (it is now unavailable due to the side effects experienced by patients taking it).

It starts with what seems to be someone’s attempt at putting their emotions onto paper, a way of coping on their own and quickly becomes a world of confusion where the band appear like demons in the night, or ancient statues, paralysed by time and fear.

The clip is somewhere between a lesson in surrealism and a session in psychology. Throughout there are flashes of ink splodges, like those you see in old movies depicting therapy sessions. With imagery paying tribute to ancient times gone by; it’s a blurring or worlds depicting a collision of emotions.

The video progresses into a section that shows bright, almost cheerful, colours shown through abstract painting. Following the video’s theme of trying to show you what it is like inside someone’s mind, it’s like the colour is there to try and take you to happiness but instead it is jarring and confusing. There is nothing familiar about it and you want to go back to the darkness if the colour isn’t the light within your soul.

Overall this clip is truly a work of art. Blending perfectly with the electronic sound and the dark lyrics it tells a tale like a blur of taking drugs your body doesn’t want and hiding from yourself, it is like your memories and thoughts are trapping you. Whether it is demons, darkness, colour or confusion.
