HOMETOWN GUIDE: Palace On WA's Best Beaches

7 August 2015 | 1:55 pm | Tom Hutchins

Speaking of the Australian influence, it turns out that Palace is actually a bit of avid surfer, and there's nothing more Aussie than hitting the beach.

After a notable entrance to the electronic scene in 2014, you’d be forgiven for thinking Perth-based producer PALACE had disappeared underground. You're kind of right, as Jeremy Smith has been underground. He's just been working hard is all. Fine-tuning his craft, the likes of which he’s about to reveal.

His new single ‘Too Young’ has just dropped and holds such a strong depth for a dance track. Featuring the tight flow of rapper Ziggy, Palace blends his own take on the vibe and attitude of the new wave of the Australian electronic scene.

Speaking of the Australian influence, it turns out that Smith is actually a bit of avid surfer, and there's nothing more Aussie than hitting the beach and potentially fighting off a shark (s/o to Mick Fanning). So when we approached Palace for a Perth Hometown Guide, he thought that he'd take us through the best (and hopefully shark free) beaches Western Australia has to offer.

Point Peron Marine Park

Point Peron, also known as Cape Peron is a marine park full of little secluded beaches and bays, as well as rocky points and reefs. Some say it is a bit of a hole, and it is... Broken glass and discarded smoking paraphernalia can be found throughout, but it also adds to the charm. It has been relatively untouched in development since World War 2 which makes it full of history, up on the dunes you can find the remains of old gun turrets, sentry towers, lookouts and tunnels. On its day, Point Peron is a beautiful place brimming with wildlife and is waiting to be explored. I find myself out here a lot when I need a break from production.

Penguin Island

Penguin Island is right behind my house. It is a small island about 500m off the main land and is part of the Shoalwater Islands marine park. Yes, there are Penguins! It is great in the summer for snorkelling and has a fun little surf spot year round. When there's a wave, I'm there.

Stark Bay, Rottnest

I was pretty conflicted choosing this one. I knew I had to include Rottnest on this list, and pretty much all the beaches on Rotto are perfect, picturesque bays with white sands and turquoise waters. Stark is a beautiful white sandy beach with heaps of reef to explore, has a fun surf spot when its on and is away from the crowds in town.

Lefthanders, Gracetown

Quite simply the best beach in WA. 10/10

Meelup Beach, Dunsborough

While this beach can get a little overcrowded, there is a reason why. Crystal clear water, in a bay protected from the seabreeze.

You can buy 'Too Young' now via iTunes.
