Live Review: Koi Child Signs to Pilerats Records + ‘Black Panda’

4 June 2015 | 10:00 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Our mates over at Pilerats have just announced their signing of Koi Child, and we couldn’t be more stoked for them.

KOI CHILD, A Fremantle based 7-piece, were dubbed as Artists to Watch by us earlier in the year, and they’re definitely living up to our prediction.

A little over a month ago, the guys put out a single called ‘Black Panda’. Produced by the incredible musical mastermind that is Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, the smooth hip hop is accentuated a BadBadNotGood-esque spew of instrumentals that do incredible well in solidifying Koi Child as fantastic hip-hop forerunners.

As unfortunate as it is, there’s been this real “Aussie hip-hop” stereotype that’s emerged because of this idea that hip hop needs to be culturally separate from other parts of the world. This is a huge stigma, and only exists in the eyes of the audience.

Koi Child are breaking down these barriers and doing hip hop their way, one that can’t be pigeonholed in such a way.

Our mates over at Pilerats have just announced their signing of Koi Child, and we couldn’t be more stoked for them. Two incredible collectives coming together to make some unique sounds even more prominent.

'Black Panda' is officially out tomorrow, June 5, through Pilerats/Warner Music Australia.

Keen to hear more from these guys, it's definitely going to be a huge year.
