Live Review: Julietta 'Goosebumps'

11 June 2015 | 11:15 am | Emma Jones

New York newcomer Julietta delivers 'Goosebumps' - a song that sets her apart with her explosive vocals and unsuspecting production making her one to watch!

It would be easy to compare New York newcomer Julietta to any of her contemporaries like BANKS or MS MR, but there is something just that little different about her that makes such comparisons fall short.

Her latest track 'Goosebumps' is an exercise in intimate lyrics but backed with tremendous vocals and expert production, to create a dark but powerful soundscape you can't help but get lost in. From the opening shimmering chords of the track, and her dulcet tones, Julietta sashays her way through 'Goosebumps', inviting you in then slamming the door when you get close enough.

The dull thuds that are heard in the beginning, under the atmospheric sounds, breathy vocals and delicate keys, set the tone for the track as the sounds begin to swirl and grow, hypnotising you with it's ethereal feel before opening up with Julietta's suddenly huge cries in the chorus. The intricate production keeps things alive, adding even more depth than there already was in the track as it works along.

As the track breaks for a second, it threatens to truly burst, everything spinning and racing towards something special - and it certainly delivers. Although you would probably be expecting one final chorus to bring it home, the track surprises you by turning into a glitchy instrumental break down that sets her even further away from her peers.

The singer said herself of the track, "Everyone struggles with finding love, having their heart broken, finding purpose, having the courage to follow their dreams, and I just want to express it through my music. I love to share my weaknesses and my strengths with others so that they could relate and feel like they aren’t alone." It's safe to say we are predicting pretty big things to come from the NYC singer, if 'Goosebumps' is anything at all to go by. Let's just hope it's sooner rather than later!
