Live Review: Baio 'Sister Of Pearl'

18 June 2015 | 12:29 pm | Emma Jones

Vampire Weekend bassist Baio has released the second single off his forthcoming debut LP titled 'Sister of Pearl', a tribute to Bowie/Ferry pop songs.

There is more to Chris Baio than meets the eye. Yes, he is the bassist of Vampire Weekend, but he is also the mastermind behind his solo electronic project, BAIO.

Experimental, upbeat and always fun, he got everyone really excited when he announced a few months ago that a debut LP was on the way, with it's debut single. Not wasting anytime in between releases, he's just dropped the second track in the form of 'Sister of Pearl'!

Sounding more like Vampire Weekend than anything else he's made, 'Sister of Pearl' is slightly different to the lead single 'Brainwash yyrr Face', albeit just as fun and unique as is anything in Baio's back catalogue. Adopting almost David Bowie-esque vocals, the summery song makes you want to frolic in a field - or at least dance around the room - with it's pounding drums, racing guitar and synth lines and infectious hook.

Whilst he described the track himself as "a Bowie and Ferry-referencing throwback pop song with a simple, straight-forward lyrical message: be who you want to be," it's a little more complex than the pop songs of era's past. The stuttered, slightly strange harpsichord-ish synth line, the layering and the pounding but playful drums make for added complexity to the track which is definitely a good thing.

'Sister of Pearl' is taken from Baio's forthcoming debut LP titled, The Names. It is due for release September 18 via Glassnote, and is gearing up to be one hell of a release.
