Live Review: SoySauce ‘Lunch Money’ EP

29 May 2015 | 10:26 am | Caitlin Medcalf

SOYSAUCE are all about social activism through their sound, and their latest EP ‘Lunch Money’ is the embodiment of this.

There’s a lot to say for artists who are prepared to use their artistry and their platform for incredible charity. It’s not that they have to, it’s that they choose to, and that’s a feat in itself.

SOYSAUCE are all about social activism through their sound, and their latest EP, Lunch Money, is the embodiment of this.

All proceeds from the sales of this EP on iTunes will go directly to aiding kids receive the proper nourishment they need on weekends. Here’s a little more about the project from the guys themselves:

“We found that kids who qualify for subsidized or sponsored (free) school breakfast and lunch programs are most of the times actually going hungry when they aren't in school. Its actually the weekends during the school year or the summer when kids go hungry the most because they aren't being supported by the programs in school to help get them fed. We want to use the money raised from our EP to help feed those kids on the weekends. We are working with the LA Food Bank and their BackPack program to give kids enough food for six meals over the weekends to make sure they don't go hungry.

We are a social artist project. Our mission is to fight hunger. We like having fun. We want to continue to create shared value. We want to be able to have a hell of a time doing what we do but have a larger echo into the rest of the world with our fans.”

The EP itself features some incredibly well seasoned bouts of dance/electronic music.

The four tracks span an extensive repertoire of sounds, not to mention some incredible features from Joni Fatora, Stalking Gia and Saturn.

The opening track ‘Thug Panda’ starts it off on a high, delivering a percussion heavy bass-fest packed to the top of the lunchbox with some incredibly hearty synths, crunchy beats and smooth string samples.

‘Broken Record’ and ‘Talking To Myself’ offer a more diverse approach to the previous sound, proving the boys can work well with vocalists too. It’s the subtleties tied with the overt motifs of their well-considered percussion that makes this a SoySauce release.

It ends on ‘Gravity Wave’ featuring Saturn, a glitchy wave of pure electronica heightened by the baritone nature of that synth. It’s almost bass, but it feels more like a synth, which definitely sits well with me. There’s that garage-esque percussion too that’s quite characteristic of their sound by the end of the EP.

SoySauce are doing good things with their platform, and not only that, but they’re making some killer music at the same time.
