Live Review: Neon Indian 'Annie'

28 May 2015 | 10:42 am | Emma Jones

Returning with his first track in two years, Neon Indian has released new single 'Annie', a warm tropical track about an elusive lover.

It's been a long time between drinks for NEOON INDIAN, but yesterday ushered in the release of his first song in two years, titled 'Annie'. Carrying on some trademark Neon Indian sounds, but with a modern touch, 'Annie' is the first taste off a new forthcoming album, and something to be very excited about!

Starting off with some psychedelic guitar licks and samples of what sounds like a jungle or rainforest, the track gets your attention immediately with it's warm sounds. Real name Alan Palomo's voice is loud and clear, expertly mixed in with the cacophony of sounds also going on. Like a revitalised 2011, 'Annie' is both nostalgic but forward-thinking.

The funk laden track is reminiscent of Palomo's previous works, but with a modern flair in the production and added bass - both side effects of the rapidly developing music industry over the past two years. Although it is still debatable as to whether "chillwave" was actually a thing, there is absolutely nothing chill about this.

With lyrics pleading with an elusive lover that doesn't answer her phone, Palomo's vocals and harmonies are impressively passionate and soulful, adding to the nostalgic throwbacks, but all the way back to the 80's. In a time where the 80's nostalgia is making a fierce comeback, Neon Indian has managed to make it sound something entirely his own.

'Annie' is available for purchase on iTunes now, with a new album expected out later this year.
