Live Review: LION BABE 'Move On Up' (Curtis Mayfield Cover)

28 May 2015 | 10:40 am | Katie Rowley

New York's most fearsome duo have covered Curtis Mayfield's disco soul classic, 'Move On Up', and it's great.

We told you not long ago to take a mental note of the names Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman. For those who were paying attention, to which experimental New York duo do these names belong? That’s right. LION BABE.

LION BABE dazzled with their excellent single ‘Wonder Woman’, the Pharrell produced bouncy flouncy slice of contemporary R’n’B. In a self-aware nod to their 70s inspired sound, the pair have presented us with a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s disco soul classic ‘Move on Up’.

Their take on the original features an array of thundering drums, space rocket samples, juddering bass and jungle jingle bells, ensuring that it’s a cover that sounds very much of the moment.

Hervey’s voice once again sounds luscious and sultry, nailing the falsetto ‘move on up’ chorus, whilst Goodman’s production holds one’s attention. The track was recorded as part of ESPN's NFL coverage. Couple this with the Pharrell production credits, and we're getting pretty excited to see what happens next for the duo.
