Live Review: Foreign/National 'The Hedonist'

13 May 2015 | 7:00 pm | Emma Jones

Melbourne five piece Foreign/National release 'The Hedonist', the first taste off their forthcoming debut album.

Melbourne five piece FOREIGN/NATIONAL have been kicking about for a while, having dropped a self-titled EP late last year. From there, they've nailed some pretty notable goals, including playing at Paradise festival, and jumping on The Jungle Giants upcoming national tour. It was this EP that first caught a lot of attention for the boys, and now they return to re-capture our ears and hearts with their new track, 'The Hedonist'.

Taken from their forthcoming debut album, Foreign/National spent no time delaying in getting back into the studio after last year's EP. The results don't get much more impressive than this, and it has us very excited to hear what else the boys have up their sleeves.

Blending psychedelia with pop, rock and even a bit of jazz, Foreign/National are doing one hell of a job of not sticking to any one genre. Teaming up with Joey Walker from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the influences and inspirations are worn very clearly on the song's metaphorical sleeve, but re-worked in a way that is entirely their own.

Angsty lyrics, warped vocals, groovy percussion and 70's nostalgia tinged guitar melodies all intertwine in 'The Hedonist', like a rose-coloured trip on a sunny afternoon. The song moves into a kaleidoscopic jam, and would no doubt be a highlight in a live setting. If they keep this up, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of Foreign/National, and that is definitely a good thing!
