Live Review: Tei Shi 'Verde' EP

2 April 2015 | 9:37 am | Emma Jones

Tei Shi's long awaited sophomore EP 'Verde' is finally available for streaming, comprising of five tracks showcasing just how talented she really is.

It's no secret we here at PURPLE SNEAKERS are big fans of TEI SHI. From her epic single marking her return to the scene late last year, 'Bassically' to sophomore single 'See Me', and even her most recent release in 'Go Slow', we haven't been the only ones watching her rapid rise.

Singing her way into the hearts and ears of many, Tei Shi has become one of this young year's most exciting artists, and her long awaited EP, Verde makes this incredibly justified.

From opener 'Can't Be Sure', with its pulsing organ chords and ethereal, soft vocals, things are off to a powerful start. With meticulous layering, (real name) Valerie Teicher introduces more and more as the song swells. Harmonising with different vocal lines, Teicher's voice is pitted against itself, with soaring falsettos and low moans, over peculiar synth lines and erratic beats, before leading straight into lead (and standout) single, 'Bassically'.

The huge track was the perfect re-introduction to Teicher, as it grabbed listeners by the shirt and never really let them go. Whilst 'Can't Be Sure' had her voice light and airy, 'Bassically' really shows off her huge range with her powerful cries compromising most of the track. However, it's Tei Shi's dynamic approach that makes her so enjoyable to listen to, with third track 'See Me' slowing things down just enough to prove this.

'See Me' is the calm, gentle and hypnotic second single that saw Teicher's being described as "mermaid music"; swirling and softly sung. It's the quietest, and most vulnerable song of Verde, and is a tap on the brake pedal before most recent single 'Go Slow' kicks into gear.

Playing things up in her most experimental track, 'Go Slow' was only released last week, but has already cemented itself as one of Tei Shi's best - the bouncing, playful production intertwines with her light but captivating vocals, and is completely juxtaposed with final track 'Get It'. The sensual, emotive closer is a slow burner, mirroring the vulnerability of 'See Me'but with stronger R'n'B influences.

Verde is a superb sophomore release from Tei Shi, with it's potent alt-pop songs ranging from the soft trickle of See Me to the all out explosive 'Bassically'. Tei Shi's success comes as no surprise, with Verde simply just reiterating just how much she has going for her.
