Live Review: Rituals. 'Co Runna'

8 April 2015 | 2:49 pm | Emma Jones

Melbourne producer Rituals. will release his debut album 'Infinity Plus' later this month after releasing his first dark, experimental single 'Co Runna'

If it's spooky, minimal, experimental or dark electronica you want, look no further than RITUALS. Gearing up to drop his debut album on label // THIS THING // later this month, the Melbourne producer does things differently, and first taste 'Co Runna' is no exception.

Starting off with reverb drenched chords, a wall of fuzz and a scattering of samples, 'Co Runna' is immediately captivating because of it's stark differences to any other sound heard in the Melbourne scene (or anywhere else for that matter). The slow moving track weaves it's way along, gradually swelling as more and more is added.

From the scrambling, warped feedback to the increasingly hypnotic chanting of the vocal samples, the skittering drum patterns and the almost heartbeat like bass line, the eerie track swells before fading out completely in a series of robotic noises, leaving you feeling quite uneasy and unsure of what you've just heard.

'Co Runna' is the first single off Rituals. forthcoming LP Infinity Plus, in which // This Thing // describes it as, "Heavy and minimal genre-voyeurism". Considering that description, and the fact that he is now labelmates with Electric Sea Spider, a front runner in the experimental scene, we can definitely expect Infinity Plus (out April 21) to be as genre-defying and boundary pushing as this first track is.
