Live Review: Bugseed ‘Germinate’

7 April 2015 | 8:32 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

The Tokyo-based experimental enigma that is BUGSEED creates killer beats that feel retrospective and pertinently well-informed.

I think one of the hardest facets of being a musician would be creating scores or soundtracks for films. It’s considerably easier to create something with your own personal intent, but when trying to consider something within the scopes of someone else's realms, you're then ultimately limited.

Constraints aside, BUSGEED creates sounds that could quite easily be included in films or incredible visual showings. The offerings are quirky, yet have a somewhat visual aspect to them that actually evokes a unique sense of recognition.

It’s a creative sound that’s quite reminiscent of 90’s underground hip-hop (I could feel some MF DOOM spitting over this), and I think this really contributes to that kind of synesthesia feeling it evokes.

Although coming in at two minutes - ‘Germinate’ is two minutes of complete goodness. It’s short, sharp and to the point, yet says quite a bit.

Bugseed knows his stuff, and it’s quite obvious in the way that his delivered this slice of smooth goodness.

Rich in its sound, reminiscent in its prowess, and even moreso retrospective in the way that it’s drawn from some pretty cool cultural pin points. Bugseed’s making the kind of music that needs to happen in this day.
